- The numbers brands advertise are measured in different ways. A single-wavelength infrared reading, a full-spectrum IRER figure, and TSER are three different tests — comparing them side by side without context is how buyers get misled.

- The film is only half the job. The same premium film can look flawless or terrible depending on who installs it, which is why the second half of this page is about installation standards.
Why Window-Tint Numbers Can Be Misleading
Before any comparison table means anything, you need to know what the numbers measure. Manufacturers are not lying with their specs — but they do choose the measurement that flatters their film. Here is the vocabulary, in plain English.
- A darker film almost always posts stronger solar numbers than a lighter film from the same product line — shade is doing part of the work.
- Compare films at similar VLT levels. A 70% windshield film against a 15% rear film tells you nothing about the technology.
- Infrared figures may be measured across very different wavelength ranges — a single-wavelength spot reading and a full 780–2,500 nm average are not the same test.
- A high selective-IR number is not the same measurement as TSER. Both are legitimate; they answer different questions.
- TSER is generally the broader measure of total solar-energy performance, because it includes visible light and UV as well as infrared.
- Published laboratory results vary with glass type, film shade, and testing method — most data sheets assume single-pane 6 mm clear glass, which no modern vehicle actually has.
- Final VLT is the film and your vehicle's existing glass combined. Factory glass typically measures 70–80% VLT before any film is applied.
VLT — Visible Light Transmission
The percentage of visible light that passes through the film and glass together. A 35% film lets roughly 35% of visible light through — lower numbers look darker. Ohio law is written in terms of final measured VLT, not the film's label.
TSER — Total Solar Energy Rejected
The percentage of the sun's total energy — visible light, infrared, and UV combined — that the filmed glass keeps out. TSER is generally the broadest single measure of real-world heat performance.
IR rejection — Infrared Rejection
How much of the sun's infrared energy the film blocks. Infrared is the wavelength band you feel as radiant heat on your skin, but it is only part of total solar energy — a high IR number is not the same thing as high TSER.
IRER — Infrared Energy Rejection
An infrared measurement over the 780–2,500 nm range that also accounts for absorbed IR energy re-radiated into the cabin. Eastman brands (LLumar, FormulaOne, SunTek) and 3M publish IRER, and it reads lower — but more conservatively — than spot IR figures.
SIRR — Selective / Spot Infrared Rejection
Infrared rejection measured either across 780–2,500 nm without re-radiated energy (SunTek's SIRR) or at a single wavelength such as 1,025 nm (XPEL's published IR figure). These methods produce the big 90%+ numbers you see in marketing.
UV rejection — Ultraviolet Rejection
The percentage of ultraviolet light blocked. Virtually every premium film blocks 99% or more, which protects skin and slows interior fading. UV rejection is essentially a tie among quality brands.
VLR — Visible Light Reflectance
How mirror-like the film looks from outside. Lower reflectance gives the clean, factory-glass appearance most drivers want. Ceramic and carbon films are typically far less reflective than older metalized films.
Glare reduction — Glare Reduction
How much the film cuts blinding visible light — headlights at night, low winter sun, reflection off snow and wet pavement. Glare reduction tracks closely with how dark the shade is.
Color stability — Color Stability / Fading Rate
How well the film holds its intended color over years of sun exposure. Cheap dyed films turn purple; premium carbon and ceramic films are engineered not to. Rayno publishes a fading rate below 1% for Phantom films.
Construction — Film Construction
What actually creates the performance: dyes, metals, carbon particles, ceramic particles, or multilayer optical films. Construction determines signal friendliness, reflectivity, color stability, and how the film ages.
Warranty — Manufacturer Warranty
Premium films carry lifetime limited warranties against bubbling, peeling, and discoloration — but every warranty requires qualifying professional installation and has written limitations. Ask to see the actual warranty card, not just the word 'lifetime.'

What is the difference between Rayno Phantom S5, S9 and Phantom II?
All share the same nano carbon-ceramic foundation, lifetime warranty, and dye-free, metal-free construction. S5 publishes up to 72% infrared rejection, S7 (the middle tier we also carry) up to 81%, and S9 up to 93% by shade. Phantom II is the flagship: up to 97% IR rejection, enhanced film construction, an antibacterial surface layer, and Rayno's most advanced optical clarity.
Does ceramic tint need to be dark to reject heat?
No. Heat rejection comes from the ceramic (and carbon) particles in the film, not the darkness. A light 50% ceramic film can outperform a dark dyed film. Darker shades do add glare reduction and privacy, and they raise TSER somewhat — but you don't have to go darker than Ohio law allows to get a dramatically cooler cabin.
What does 97% infrared rejection actually mean?
It means the film blocks up to 97% of energy in the infrared band that the manufacturer measured — for Phantom II, that's Rayno's published top figure for its best-performing configuration. Infrared is the part of sunlight you feel as radiant heat on your skin, but it's only part of the sun's total energy. It does not mean the film blocks 97% of all heat.
Is IR rejection the same as TSER?
No, and this is the most common trick in tint marketing. IR rejection measures only the infrared band — sometimes only a single wavelength. TSER (Total Solar Energy Rejected) measures rejection across the entire solar spectrum: visible light, infrared, and UV. A film can advertise 96% IR while its TSER at your shade is 55–60%. Always compare both, at the same VLT.
Will Rayno tint interfere with GPS, phones or satellite radio?
No. Rayno Phantom and Phantom II are fully metal-free and dye-free, so GPS, cellular, Bluetooth, satellite radio, toll transponders, and keyless entry work exactly as before. Signal interference is a legacy problem of older metalized films — no premium ceramic film we install has it.
Does Rayno window film turn purple or fade?
Rayno publishes a fading rate below 1% for Phantom films, and independent 1,000-hour testing showed Phantom held its color 35–54% better than leading competitors. Purpling is caused by dye breakdown in cheap films; Phantom's color comes from carbon particles, which don't degrade the same way. Fading is also covered under the lifetime warranty.
Does Rayno include a warranty?
Yes. Every Rayno Phantom and Phantom II installation at A-Team includes a lifetime manufacturer warranty covering defects like bubbling, peeling, cracking, and fading — and we register it for you. Like every film warranty, it has written limitations and requires professional installation, which is exactly what you're getting.
What tint percentage is best for matching factory privacy glass?
Most factory rear privacy glass measures around 15–26% VLT, so a 15% or 20% film on the front doors usually blends well visually. Remember that Ohio requires front side windows to allow more than 50% of light through — matching dark rear glass on the front doors isn't legal for most passenger vehicles. We'll show you shades on your actual car before you decide.
Is ceramic window tint legal in Ohio?
Ceramic film itself is legal — what's regulated is darkness and placement. Legality depends on the window location, your vehicle's classification, the existing glass, and the final measured VLT after film is applied. No shop can guarantee a particular shade is legal without measuring. We install Ohio-compliant configurations every day and will confirm current requirements for your specific vehicle before we cut film.
Does the film brand matter more than the installer?
The installer matters at least as much. A premium film installed with contamination, gaps, or creases will look and perform worse than a mid-tier film installed perfectly. The best result is obviously both: a film with published performance and an installer who preps, cuts, and finishes to the manufacturer's standard. That combination is the entire argument of this page.
